History of Collingwood

Where did it all begin?

Collingwood Primary School was founded on 12th April 1929. This plaque hangs even today in the staff corridor to commemorate its opening!

The school’s namesake, Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, was a prolific commander-in-chief of the royal navy over 200 years ago! He fought many battles to protect England. Here is a monument dedicated to the man located near the mouth of the River Tyne.

Original school building

Believe it or not, the school was much smaller at first, having only a few classrooms and classes of smaller sizes.

Peculiarly, the entrances for girls and boys were separate at first! Maybe because they wanted to avoid a corridor full of cheeky grins and bickering… or perhaps they simply believed that boys and girls together would cause absolute chaos! Either way, times have changed, and now we can all enter through the same door—without any fear of mischief (well, mostly)!

Since its founding, there have been many expansions and renovations, such as the recent addition of a new Year 6 classroom! Pictured below is the grand opening by the North Shields MP, Alan Campbell.
